Micro-Soldering Example
We recently received a USB flash drive with missing legs on the controller microchip. Rather than source an identical chip or go the off-chip route we decided to fix it by removing a small portion of the silicon substrate and micro soldering the contacts back to the printed circuit board using very thin magnet wire thereby successfully recovering all the data. This was an ideal situation because if we went off-chip there was a small risk that we may not get all the data.
